About Liberty, NC

Liberty was founded in 1809 near the plantation of John Leak and was originally named Liberty Oak. The town was officially incorporated in 1889. Liberty's town seal bears the image of the Liberty Oak with 1809 as its founding date.

The town's name carries a powerful story from the Revolutionary War. After the Battle of Guilford Court House in 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis retreated toward Yorktown, Virginia. As his army fled, American prisoners were released at the crossroads of what is now Fayetteville Street and Raleigh Avenue. The freed prisoners reportedly shouted "Liberty! Liberty!" — giving the town its enduring name. Today, Liberty celebrates its heritage as part of Revolutionary Randolph, marking 250 years of history.

In the mid-1800s, Liberty became an important stop on the Fayetteville & Western Plank Road — a 129-mile toll road made of wooden planks that ran from Winston-Salem to Fayetteville. At the time, it was the longest plank road in the world, and it helped establish Liberty as a vital trading center in the Piedmont region.

Education has always been central to Liberty's identity. The Liberty Academy, founded on May 6, 1885 as a charter school, helped establish the town's reputation as a place of higher learning. The Liberty Christian Church (now the United Church of Christ) was founded on October 11, 1884, and remains a cornerstone of the community.

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Piedmont, Liberty has preserved much of its historic character. The Liberty Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, featuring beautifully preserved buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Liberty is known for its charming antique shops and the popular Liberty Antique Festival, which draws visitors from across the region.
